Chapter 56: The First Sight of Suspicion Part 1

The temperature is cold in the early morning of autumn.

Jin Xi enters the office at dawn.  There aren’t many passersby in the building at this hour.  When she passes a group of officers, she sees a few of them leaning crookedly against their chairs and sleeping.  They’ve clearly been busy following Han Chen all night long.

She pushes open the Black Shield Team’s office door and sees Chatterbox leaning forward and sleeping on his desk.  Although he looks refined on the outside, his snoring is incredibly loud.  Xiao Zhuan is sitting in front of his computer.  The monitor’s light is reflecting on his face as he types on the keyboard.  He notices her arrival and reveals a slight smile, “It’s still early.  Leader said we’ll wait until it’s office hours before bringing the suspects in for questioning so that we don’t inadvertently alert the killer.”

Jin Xi nods.  Seeing that Han Chen’s and Cold Face’s seats are empty, she raises her head to take a look at the half-closed door of the room in the back.

“They just went inside for a nap,” Xiao Zhuan whispers, “Both of them haven’t slept for two nights.  Do you want to go accompany Leader?  I’ll keep a lookout for you!” Read more

Chapter 55: She’s Better Than Me (2 of 2)

The corners of Bai Jin Xi’s mouth curve upward as she flips through some documents.  She then hears footsteps and chatter coming from the doorway.

The deputy chief of the criminal investigations department is walking past with two unfamiliar faces from the meeting just now.

Jin Xi puts down the documents immediately and stands up.  At the same time, she sees the deputy chief talking to one of them and pointing inside, “This is the Black Shield Team’s office.  Have a look around, Professor Xu.  Xiao Bai, pour a cup of tea for Professor Xu.”

Jin Xi nods right away.

But the person answers with a smile, “No need.  You people always like to bully those of us who study criminal psychology.  I’m here to cheer for her, not to drink tea.” Read more

Chapter 55: She’s Better Than Me (1 of 2)

The meeting is adjourned.

The investigators get up one after the other.  The members of the Black Shield Team also stand up.  Jin Xi looks up and sees that Han Chen is still standing at the very front.  He’s been called to stay behind by the Chief to chat.

“Not bad, Han Chen,” a loud and slightly raspy voice says, attracting everyone’s attention.

It’s one of the veteran investigators speaking with the surname Xun.  He’s near his retirement and has a head full of white hair, but he is highly respected in the team.  The moment he speaks, the Chief, Qin Wen Long, Han Chen and the others all turn to look.

“Although this case is a bit challenging, as long as we are like Han Chen and put all of our efforts on our solid and detailed investigation work, it’ll only be a matter of time before we solve the case!”  Old Xun says.

“Yes!”  “Yes!”  Many investigators start clapping in agreement.  Jin Xi and the others also smile and clap along to support their Leader.  Han Chen, on the other hand, doesn’t have much of an expression on his face. Read more

Chapter 54: Painstaking Investigation

Han Chen is standing in the light.  His jacket is unzipped, making his shoulders look broad, waist slim and legs long.  He looks very calm, but also carrying his usual sense of being indifferent.  He isn’t like when he’s alone with Jin Xi where he’s always smiling.

“No assumptions on the suspect’s age or appearance.  But since he was able to carry a 50-60 kg dead body from the road to the forest and carefully avoided leaving behind any clear footprints or marks, it shows that he was able to complete the process very effortlessly.  Therefore, he should be an adult male who’s strong and well-built.”

Jin Xi smiles the moment she hears him say “no assumptions on the suspect’s age or appearance.”  This fellow……he’s doing it on purpose! Read more
